A former phosphate mining site

A former phosphate mining site in Hillsborough County, Florida has leaked millions of gallons of wastewater into the Tampa Bay ecosystem. The company that operated the plant, Mulberry Phosphates, went bankrupt in 2001. They pumped 65 million gallons of wastewater into the bay.

When workers at the plant were checking the water level on Sunday morning, they noticed that the level had dropped three feet. It turned out that a sinkhole had opened up in the middle of a mountain of radioactive waste.

This mountain, which is about 200 feet tall, holds hundreds of millions of gallons of waste water. That water is polluted and could cause red tide and other problems in the marine environment.

Several environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against the phosphate industry. The Center for Biological Diversity is one of the organizations.
